KZN MTB COMMISSION

Mud, Sweat and Gears

The KZN MTB Commission is a volunteer organisation established in terms of the constitution of Cycling KZN, and is a subsidiary of Cycling KZN. Cycling SA reports to the Department of Sport and as such is accountable to the government of South Africa. The KZN MTB Commission comprises a number of commissioners that strive to administer the sport in the province in a responsible and professional way. Our primary goal is to manage mountain biking in KZN in accordance with the rules and regulations that have been developed over time, while promoting and adding value wherever possible.

International News

A great day for Austria and Germany in Italy as Mona Mitterwallner and Andreas Seewald win the UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships.

WOMEN’S RACE: MITTERWALLNER DOMINATES

The incredible Mitterwallner looked in imperious form as she took the victory, the 19-year-old dominant over the 80km course, which combined a series of technical sections, steep climbs, fast firebreaks, mule tracks and many kilometres of dirt roads, taking place over two tough laps.

Mitterwallner finished clear of second-placed Maja Wloszczowska. Incredibly, the 37-year-old Polish rider won this event just one year after Mitterwallner was born in 2003. Many speculated that this could be the last race of her career. If it is, what a memorable way to retire. Spain’s Fisher Egusquiza completed the podium, while the home crowd celebrated Giada Specia’s fourth position.

KZN Cycling Development

For many years now, Pietermaritzburg and the province of Kwazulu – Natal has been recognised worldwide as a leader in the staging of major cycling events and since 2009, Pietermaritzburg has been recognised as Africa’s Bike City. In fact, the region is now recognised worldwide as having staged the most varied international events in history - a great accolade for the city and the region.

After staging 10 x UCI World Cups, 6 x UCI World Championships and 3 x Continental Championships in various disciplines as well as a host of other major international road cycling events, it was decided that the focus of activities should switch to development programmes and the unearthing of new talent from the region of KZN for the future. Thus the KZN Cycling Development programme came into being and is being undertaken in conjunction with the KZN Department of Sport & Recreation who provide the vast bulk of the funding that allows for such activities to take place and also with Cycling South Africa.
