XCO and XCC National Championships Results

Thaba Trails, Gauteng played host to the National Championships for the Cross-Country Olympic (XCO) and Cross-Country Short Track (XCC) cycling events that were held over the weekend (14-16 April 2023) with top athletes from across the country competing for the coveted national titles.

In the XCO event, Philip Buys caused quite a stir as he showed off his impressive post Absa Cape Epic form as he rode away from his competitors thus taking home the gold medal. He finished the gruelling course in a time of 1 hour 28 minutes and 26 seconds. Alan Hatherly, who admitted to suffering from the high altitude, finished in second place almost two minutes down, followed by Arno Du Toit in third place.

International News

The 2023 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup embraces additional disciplines and brings together more events, at more venues, in more countries, across more months of the year, with more top-level riders, for more exciting racing than ever before. And the action starts soon!

For 2023, the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup’s established formats of cross-country Olympic (XCO), cross-country short track (XCC) and downhill (DHI) are being joined by cross-country marathon (XCM), enduro (EDR) and E-enduro (E-EDR).

The curtain raises in March – with this week’s opening Enduro event in Tasmania (Australia), and runs right through to the final fixtures in Mont-Sainte-Anne (Canada), where XCO, XCC and DHI competitions will bring the curtain down on the season. In between, athletes will traverse Europe’s finest off-road tracks, courses and destinations.

Ground-breaking international partnership will bring cycling to thousands of children in rural South Africa

An innovative partnership has been developed between organisations from the UK and South Africa to establish a specialist cycle hub which will enable thousands of children in rural South Africa to learn how to ride and maintain bicycles.

Since 2016, the University of Leeds and the Bambisanani Partnership have devised and delivered a Cycling to Success programme based at Mnyakanya High School in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal.

This programme has led to almost 200 young people learning how to ride bikes safely, and to also maintain and fix bikes in the community. The programme has also operated a bike rental scheme to allow leaners who live great distances from school to ride to and from school.
